The Analogous Colors of Thoughtful Journey DSP Brings Unmatched Beauty to Stampin’ Up!’s Sophisticated Sled
In the heat of July, the Beauty of the Sophisticated Sled Bundle and the Thoughtful Journey DSP bring forth delightful thoughts of fun at wintertime. The sled and skate die cuts were a treat to play with. You can see both solid paper and simple coloring techniques to add depth and to the die cut elements. This combination helped tie them into the wood grain frame (from the Country Woods DSP) of the window and the watercolor scene (from the Thought Journey DSP).
Blends and Water Painters were the coloring tools used to create depth in the die cuts. I cut the skates from the Fluid 100 Water Color Paper. A light wash of Misty Moonlight and Gray Granite along the back of the boot and around the toe took away some of the flatness of the stark white. There is a separate die for just the blades. I cut them once in Silver Foil and once in Basic Black. I snipped the blade from the Basic Black sole and heel and layered it over the full Silver Foil, which was then placed over the blade of the skate. Following the embossed wood grain with the Stampin’ Blends, texture was added to the solid Pecan Pie die cut.
The star of this card is of course the DSP. The Thoughtful Journey watercolor designs are filled with the beauty of peaceful scenes. This watercolor image of Winter pines by a lake in Misty Moonlight and Blackberry Bliss is stunning. These colors are near each other on the color wheel making them analogous. I think that Boho Blue may have been used to create the sky. The lovely part about watercolor is that you can get tints and shades of the same color (creating a monochromatic palette). Even though Blackberry Bliss is one of the richest colors in the Stampin’ Up! color collection, it is soft in light in this image. The ink is diluted with water to create the tint of the rich color. You can see both of these colors softened and deepened with the amount of ink added to the paper.
A long time ago I learned that a card was not compete until I added a white (or light colored) inside panel to each card I made. Just a little tip here. The sentiment is often stamped above the image, like it is here, or somtimes over the image itself. If the sentiment is alone on the card front, I find that I start wondering if it straight or centered. This way the image takes my focus away from my worry about how the sentiment. And remember, if it is perfect, It isn’t handmade.
