Playing with Primary Colors in a Subtles Palette for an Easter Design

Primary colors are Red, Blue and Yellow. They make a great combination but they don’t always fit for every occasion. Today is the Easter Blog Hop, and with Easter only a couple of days away, I have a confession to make. I don’t usually send Easter Cards. I admit for someone that celebrates Easter and loves making cards of every occasion, it should be a no brainer. I realized I didn’t even invest in an Easter stamp this season. I was so taken by the many great nature stamps in the Mini Catalog (that will go away by the end of next week), I didn’t notice that I didn’t have an Easter stamp.
I decided to go back to the Everyday Details Bundle to create a card that could be used for Easter, or a Birthday, or a Lovely Spring Celebration. Eggs are a beautiful symbol of Spring and rebirth and they are so much fun to paint. I used Balmy Blue, Fresh Fresia, and Lemon Lime Twist. Now, I wouldn’t call these colors strickly tints or pastles of the Red, Yellow, and Blue. They are shifted ever so slightly around the color wheel The Yellow is more toward Green, the Red more toward Purple and the Blue more toward Green. It brings the colors all to the cooler side of the color wheel. When you are looking at the colors together it works. Never be afraid to play with color and shift them around the color wheel a bit.
The depth and form of the nest is created from the Early Espresso on the inside. I used the Pecan Pie on the outside bottom and Wild Wheat made an appearance at the top to add a bit of lightness. The combination of deep and light colors brings the nest to life with a 3D appearance.

You might notice that the Balmy Blue that I used for the sentiment on the front and on the inside look slightly different. The ink will appear different on colored cardstock than it will on Basic White Cardstock. Count on it and use the effect to add more interest in you design. On the inside I stamped off on the Lemon Lime Twist nest as I did not want it to overpower the sentiment. Again, Playing with color and trying different combinations will sometimes surprise you.

To create this card, I used the Water Painters on the Fluid 100 Watercolor Paper to color the nest. I used the circle dies from the Everyday Details Dies. After I die cut the nest, I went to work with the Blending Brushes. I used it on the edges of the nest circle and on the Nature’s Sweetness DSP. The gold flecks shine through and add a little more glimmer to the card. The Blending Brushes do a better job at coloring DSP because watercolor will ward the paper and look kind of bubbled when you mount it on the card.
I really had fun making this card. It was really easy to make and a great option for a springtime celebration.
